Developing a professional web site can be a frustrating task. The steps described below will give you an idea of what happens... from start to finish.
At Dundass Web Studio, there are five major steps in the web site development process.
Step 1 - Initial Consultation & Proposal to set goals and objectives
Step 2 - Site Planning and Architecture
Step 3 - Design
Step 4 - Development & Evaluation Phase
Step 5 - Launch and Follow-up
Step 1 - Initial Consultation & Proposal
The first step in creating a proposal for your site is to find out exactly what you require. To do this, information is collected through the completion of the Web Site Worksheet and then the client submitting it for analysis and evaluation. The scope and depth of a project begins to materialize during this phase and a Proposal is presented.
What the client receives:
- A comprehensive report and an architectural diagram for the proposed Web site.
- An approximate timeline for completion.
- Detailed cost estimate of the design of your Web site.
- A list of your responsibilities in terms of providing content, graphics, logo.
- Payment terms.
- Contract.
Once we both sign a contract to state we will hold up our end of the bargain and 50% of the proposed development fee has been paid, the next step will commence.
Step 2 - Site Planning and Architecture
Before starting your project, your existing printed and digital material, photographs, logo, and any other relevant material will be needed. They will be organized by level of priority. This is where the structure begins to take shape. Most visitors to a Web site are looking for information. We need to make that information easily accessible and ensure that if they move in the wrong direction they can get back on track without getting lost.
- Define the navigation & flow of the information
- Identify resources needed for the project
- Client provides content
- Decide on the site's overall concept and layout
Step 3 - Design
Dundass Web Studio starts the design phase by creating a graphic file of the proposed web site based on your guidelines and the defined site architecture. No text is used here. It is simply the web site graphics shell (the overall "look and feel" of the web site). This is the part of the web design that takes the longest and is the bulk of the project.
You will be shown two (minimum) to four (maximum) initial designs for your review. The Consultant can, from experience, tell you that, typically, we will spend up to, about, three days in the creation of these four original designs. A design will be chosen and refined and then the design will be recreated in a combination of web images and HTML code as the master design template.
- Decide upon the overall look and feel of the Web site.
- Implement font styles, colour palettes, photographs, illustrations, and any necessary materials.
- Implement the design as specified in the design and architecture phases.
Prototype
Dundass Web Studio will create a finished design template, showing the graphical elements with some abbreviated content, so you can see what your site will look like. This will allow you to test the navigation and content presentation of the site. You can request modifications at this time.
If dynamic scripts or interactive features are included in your project specs, only a minimal representation will be included in the prototype.
Once you approve the prototype, we are done designing. Now we begin the programming and construction for the final site.
Step 4 - Development & Evaluation Phase
Programming
The exact nature of the programming would be defined by your project. It could include JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets, Dynamic HTML, Active Server Pages, pre-defined CGI-scripts, or database connectivity (MS Access / Text).
Creation of Template Page
Dundass Web Studio will produce both the graphics and HTML production for all required Web pages and templates. Creation of Meta tags and Titles.
Testing and Debugging
In phase one of the evaluation process, your web site will be placed on a web server to be tested under live condition where it will be tested and debugged. During this phase we will go through the site with a fine-toothed comb making sure all interactive components are working properly. In addition, Dundass Web Studio will test the site on multiple platforms using different Web browsers, resolutions, and colour depths ensuring that the final product is accessible to the widest range on Internet users.
During the second phase of evaluation, you will be given a username and password and invited to access the web site to offer your input. To begin with, check over the content you supplied to make sure it is correct. Then examine every aspect of the web site in detail. Was it what you had envisioned in your mind? Assuming the development plan was carefully laid out to begin with, changes should be few and minor.
Step 5 - Launch and Follow-up
Final stage, once the site has final approval, your web site is ready to "go live." The password protection will be removed and it will be submitted to search engines. (This service is part of every web design package.) After the site has been launched, Karen will discuss with the client a review of the initial reactions to site. My work is complete when you have a finished product you are proud of.
- Submit Web site to search engines and directories
- Review initial reactions to live site
- ONE MONTH of site revisions after launch
